The Gay People’s Union was the first LGBT organization that Lou became a part of. The GPU published a monthly newsletter, which covered local and national events, published reviews and opinion articles, and advertised LGBT-friendly businesses. Lou published his first articles through GPU News, and worked as the typesetter for the periodical. He also served as the GPU secretary. Some of the more notable articles include “A Transvestite Answers a Feminist,” “Looking Toward a Transvestite Liberation” (later republished in an anthology on gay liberation), his short biographies on historical transgender/crossdressing people, and his creative writings.
