Collected here are many of Lou’s articles published in periodicals such as the Gay People’s Union (GPU) News and the FTM International Newsletter. These short writings offer a glimpse into the things Lou wanted to share with a wide audience–the compositions he was proud of, the events and ideas he believed were important, and so on. He even showed off his creative writing abilities by sometimes publishing poetry and fiction writing. Lou’s emphasis on the specific issues that affected transvestites and transgender people helped shape the GPU so that it became more inclusive, and it stood out among similar organizations across the United States. Later, he would use his experience writing and typesetting for GPU News to spearhead a newsletter–and community–specifically for transgender men.

GPU News – The Gay People’s Union was the first LGBT organization that Lou became a part of. The GPU published a monthly newsletter, which covered local and national events, published reviews and opinion articles, and advertised LGBT-friendly businesses.
Metamorphosis Magazine – Published from 1982 – 1988, this magazine was part of the Metamorphosis Medical Research Foundation, founded by Rupert Raj and Mario Martino. The newsletter covered a variety of topics of interest to transgender men, such as surgical breakthroughs, media reviews, lists of resources, and more. Lou contributed to Metamorphosis and was a close friend of Rupert Raj.
The Gateway – The Gateway newsletter was published by the Gateway Gender Alliance–also known as the Golden State Girls/Guys–a social and educational network of crossdressers and transgender people located in California. Lou served as an editor for the newsletter and contributed writing to it between August, 1979, and September, 1980.
Information for the Female-to-Male – Lou wrote and published three versions of this informational booklet. The publication provides tips on being read as male, information about medical procedures for transitioning, examples of transmasculine people from history, and lists of resources and contacts. As Lou researched and gathered more information, he added it to the book, so each edition is longer than the one before it.
FTM Newsletter – This newsletter began as a get-together group for trans men. Lou began publishing the newsletter in 1987, and it quickly spread to transmasculine people across the world. The newsletter had articles on current events and politics, practical advice, medical news, comics, and more. The group that Lou began, FTM International, persists today.
